Volume LIV, No. 1, September, 2013

Dear Campers, Parents, Staff, Alums & Friends,

Well, that was fast.  Like most everyone else, the adjustment from camp back to “city” life is a little slower for us than the other way around.  When we arrive in Wisconsin in May, we can see the little puffs of smoke come off the back of our shoes as we hit the ground running.  We’re so excited to be in the beautiful Northwoods, and to contemplate all the great times that are ahead of us, that we just get right to it. When the seasons change and we arrive back in Tucson, the pace is a lot different.  There is still the excitement of starting the planning process for another great summer coming up in some months, and Tucson is also a beautiful place to be, but it just ain’t quite the same.  For one thing, it is blazing hot down here!  You know it’s hot when you can’t seem to get any cold water out of the tap.  Seriously!  The best we can do is luke warm water for the next few weeks.  You want cold water, you gotta add some ice. So, we’ll sweat it out for a few weeks (or months), and then we’ll be very happy to be here when winter rolls around.

Up north, winter still seems to be a long way off.  We had quite a heat wave to finish off August.  As you know, a week after camp ended, I was able to do a quick canoe trip up in the Boundary Waters for a week along with Dustin and a cousin of ours.  It was glorious up there!  We had perfect weather, and while we worked pretty hard and had some numerous and long portages, it was also soooo relaxing.  When we returned to camp, it had become hot and dry.  The fields were almost all brown, and it was pushing 90 degrees.  Then, within 2 days we received more than 4” of “heavy dew,” and the fields just popped back to green and lush again.  It was amazing!  It was also very hard to pack up and leave, but the calendar marches on, so away we went.  In the meantime, JAKE REUTER has been skiing down in Santiago, Chile, and he’ll arrive here in Tucson very soon. We’ll hang out a bit, and then he’ll head for home in the Chicago area.

Of course, there was time to meet with our contractors and builders and to make some plans for some fantastic improvements and additions to camp for next summer.  Did that pique your interest a little?  Well, stay tuned as we tell you more about it in the coming issues of “Timberlife!”

Slammer

YO PARENTS & CAMPERS: Just a quick reminder that the Memory Books most of you ordered will be completed in early November. The photographer will mail you your Memory Book once he has them completed. If you live in the Chicago area, you can pick your book up at our reunion on November 10th (see below). If you’re unable to attend the reunion (what??!!), your book will be mailed to you.  And we’ll also have a copy of our 2013 Reunion Video (sure to be another box office sensation!) to give to you at the reunions around the country.

CAMPER KEYLOG PAGES: So, after several years of our Keylog pages, we’ve reached the conclusion that kids don’t use them.  We know parents do, but the kids have Facebook and other stuff, so we have closed all Camper Keylog pages.  Parent Keylog pages are unaffected.  But did you know that on your Parent Keylog page there is a link that takes you to a complete address list that your kiddies can use?  Right at the bottom of the “[Your Camper’s Name]’s Summer” section is a “Camp Address List” link.  That’s the one!

YO STAFF: We hope you guys are off to a great start of the new school year, whether you’re a teacher or a student.  You guys tend to change addresses pretty often, so when that happens, please remember to update us with your new info.  That includes mailing and emailing addresses, new cell phone numbers, etc.  Thanks.

CAMP REUNIONS COMING SOON!  We don’t waste any time around here.  We have 3 camp reunions already on the books, and many more to come.  Check it out:

Reunions are SO much fun.  We get to hang out with camp friends, and re-live the incredible summer we shared together.  Some camp guys don’t get to see other camp guys too often even if they live in the same city, so this is a real treat.  And your friendly camp directors travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to come and see you, so we really hope you’ll mark your calendars, and make an effort to join us while we’re in a city near you.  Many more reunions will be on the schedule soon.  And about a month before the reunion in your home town, we’ll send you a notice about it via the US Mail.  We’ll even send you email reminders ahead of time.  See you there!!

This little section of our newsletter is for you campers (ahem….and parents!) to fill up with news about your busy days away from camp.  What have you been up to?  Any big events?  Sports?  Fun trips?  We all want to hear about it.  Consider this camp’s reserved social media space that only gets updated once a month.  The more you can tell us, the better!  Things like…after camp, GRANT KAUFMAN in Columbus, OH  got to show off the waterskiing skills he gained at camp.  Congrats to ZACH WALDEN in Northbrook, IL who made the AA division in hockey.  ARI SINGER is in St. Louis getting pumped up for hockey tryouts there.  See?  That wasn’t so hard.  But we’d like to have lots more info, so please send it our way.

Uh staff members?  You too.  Newsy items may include things like: JAMES WOOD was a traveling man for a while, taking in the sights at Disney World with JEFF & ANDY MELROSE and JOEY PAWLANKATHY LEVERTON also put in the miles, traveling to Chicago, St. Louis, Colorado, Utah, and New Jersey before heading back to South Africa.  She spent time with THE HITCHENS’, with JOSH BOLING, and with “old-timers” GREG COOPER, CHAD BYLER, KAYLA WANDSNIDER, DAN NEWMAN, and GRACE MCGOWAN.  What a great trip!  MATT & JOEY RODIN were here in Tucson last month, and Joey is now a freshman at the U of A.  “Old-timer” DREW DAVIS is also a freshman at the U of A, and recently (before I got back into town), Leslie treated our U of A contingent for a night of pizza.  The group included DAVID ARTZI, MITCHELL THOMAE, DAVID LANGEBARTEL, and “old-timer” MAX WEINTRAUB.  Also along for the free food were DUSTIN & SAMMY COHENMICHAEL BREEN is currently traveling in Japan where he took in a high school baseball game, which he noted is markedly different than those here in the States.  He also nearly got thrown out of the park when he tried to join the cheering section of one of the teams….apparently they take the cheering quite seriously, and he just didn’t measure up.
