Dear Campers, Parents, Staff, Alums & Friends,
Happy New Year to all of our camp family out there! We hope your 2017 is filled with adventure, learning, fun times, and great friends. When January 1st arrives, people often think in terms of renewal. It makes sense…a new year is filled with possibilities. We like to point out that these renewal opportunities actually come more often than once a year. Obviously March is a renewal time when the new baseball season starts, and everyone is excited about their team’s chances. Of course, June is one of the greatest moments of renewal when the new camp season begins, and people reconnect with old friend, make new friends, and see what awesome adventures await them. For us, the start of the camp season is the greatest! We’re excited, everyone else is incredibly pumped, and we get to see the new and more grown up versions of the kids we last saw the summer before. Some kids are many inches taller, some are not. Some kids have really grown and changed over the winter, and we love discovering what’s new with our old friends. So yeah…summer renewal is the best renewal. Of course, it could be said that each new day is a possible time of renewal as well. A person could wake up in the morning and decide…”it’s a new day, and I’m going to do X differently today.” That’s the cool thing about being a kid or adolescent…it’s all practice for when you’re a grown up. So you can, if you’re up to the challenge, try on new personality traits, new behaviors, and see if they fit. Maybe today you’ll be more aware of the people around you. What are they saying….how are they feeling? If that goes well, you keep that new awareness and use it all the time. Maybe tomorrow you’ll try to be more laid-back, or more intense. Each day is a new day, right?
Winter has settled in well up at camp. There is snow on the ground, the lake is frozen solid, and yet, the work continues. Our caretaker, GREG FUS, has been busy in his workshop building new benches for the Lodge. Last summer we tested out 6’ benches to ultimately replace some of the longer, bulkier benches, and it worked out well. So Greg is busy mass producing them. Our friendly builder, MICKY WHALEN has also been a busy guy. In the fall he did some work on the path that goes to the Swim Area to keep erosion in check, and he rebuilt the entire Swim Deck. He also put new roofs on Hawk and Menominee cabins. He has recently been working on putting a permanent roof over the top of the hand-washing station by the Lodge. He’s also building new benches outside of the Trampoline area so you have a place to sit when you take your shoes off and put them back on. Camp will be a quiet place for a few more months, and then activity up there will slowly begin to pick up, leading into another whirlwind summer!
We are still outpacing our enrollment for the last several summers, and that’s really exciting. First session is almost completely filled up, and some age groups second session will begin filling soon. Welcome back to the following “old-timers” who re-enrolled in the last month: GIL RON and TRE SMITH of Chicago, IL; GUS MERVIS of Carmel, IN; DYLAN and RYAN TEITELBAUM and SPENCER VERNIER of Deerfield, IL; DANNY FISCHER, GRANT GARLAND, and DYLAN STERN of St. Louis, MO; JACK VAN OOYEN of Brooklyn, NY; SAM HENSON of Highland Park, IL; JACK DE RIESTHAL of Nashville, TN; GABE NEWMAN of Oak Park, IL; and DREW CUSHING of Dallas, TX.
Welcome aboard to the following first-year campers who will join us this summer: WILLIE FIEGEN of Evanston, IL; SPENCER SHERMAN of Paradise Valley, AZ; BILLY JACK BOYCE of Tucson, AZ; COLE and HAWK PETERSON and ALEJANDRO SEIDEN of Highland Park, IL; and JORDAN FREUND of Beverly Hills, CA. We can’t wait to see you guys in the great Northwoods!! |
With the New Year upon us and the holiday season in the rear view mirror, it’s time to get back to the business of reunions and meeting new families! This month we’ll be in Denver, Atlanta, Washington, DC., Toronto and St. Louis again. By the end of January, camp travels will have taken us through 15 cities, some twice, and included so many fun reunions with so many of you! We are so appreciative of our families who have hosted our reunions around the country, and for everyone who has taken the time to come out and join us. Thanks!
YO PARENTS: We have been working the past 2 months on trying to organize all of the information you need to prepare for the summer into one handy dandy PARENT HANDBOOK. It is finally finished and ready for you to check it out. With the exception of time-sensitive info (i.e. flight schedules), you now have everything at your finger tips. You can access the handbook on your Parent Keylog page, or by clicking here. We recommend you download and/or print it out and read through it. You’ll return to it from time to time as spring – and then summer – approaches. We will ALWAYS send you email reminders as important dates arrive when information is needed. We hope this new organization helps.
This is also a friendly reminder that your Winter Deposit of $1250 is due by January 15th. Many of you have already taken care of that. Remember, you are welcome to pay with a credit card online, which will incur a 2.75% surcharge. To avoid that, you can mail a check to our Tucson office. Thanks very much.
Check out these important dates:
Right Now! | Parents of campers flying to/from camp should register with our travel agent and get their flights camp arranged. The sooner you do that, the better your fare will likely be. Click here to register.. |

However, if you order too late, like after May 1st, you run the risk that your order may not arrive in time for your camper to bring it to camp. We'll remind you of this in March, and the Packing list is already available on your Parent Keylog Page (and in your Parent Handbook) if you’d like to have a look.

AROUND THE HAND-WASHING STATION Happy holidays to all! I hope your beautiful tans last all through the winter! January 1, 2017. Looks kind of weird when I write it out for the first time... A whole new year! A blank slate to try things, make mistakes, learn, and grow! And ‘tis the season of New Year’s Resolutions. I’m sure many of you (like me) have resolved to be more active, eat healthier, be more generous to family and friends, read more books, work harder in school…good! I wish everyone luck and perseverance in completing their 2017 goals! But it also got me thinking—what about Camp Resolutions? Camp is such major part of our year, but in the craziness of finals, packing, and beautiful weather, it can be easy to miss the opportunity to reflect on what we want to get out of our camp experience right before boarding planes and busses. So maybe this is a perfect opportunity, as long as we’re already in the spirit of goal-setting! (It’s also just nice to think about camp as we have to start transitioning out of break mode and back into school mode…) So, here are some of my 2017 Camp Resolutions (hold me to them!): 1. To make EVERY camper laugh! 2. To communicate well and be available to support counselors wherever and whenever they need it! 3. To create the best Lodge dance party playlist ever known! 4. To conquer my fear of the rock wall! 5. To master Spikeball! 6. To remember all the words to the Ford song! 7. To go to more free swims/boating and canoeing! 8. To have as much fun as possible!!! What are your Camp Resolutions? Let me know: scottlorenwolf@gmail.com Until next time, Scott |
